The aim of the research project Artifacts of Memory is to explore new modes of interaction with large audiovisual collections and produce a generous interface that lets the audience dive in and explore the richness of such a collection without knowing specifically what they are searching for.

Two discovery modes are presented in this app. The camera mode finds visual lines in your environment through you camera lens and matches them to similar lines in our audiovisual collection. This mode works best when you aim your camera at low-noise, high-contrast, well-lit scenes with clear lines. Try the sides of buildings, the heating pipes in your house or the handrails on a bridge for a start, but be sure to go out and explore.

The Tap and Drag mode works by placing two fingers on your device and moving them around. Immediately, you will be presented with results, and they seem to form a new stop-motion narrative.

After finding an interesting item in either mode, tap it to get more information and see the original item at the archives website!
